Why Waterproof?

We might not get a lot of rain here in southern California, but that doesn’t mean your outdoor surfaces can’t benefit from waterproof protection! Rain or shine, waterproofing comes with many hidden benefits.

Protects against water damage

Of course, the biggest benefit of waterproofing is protecting against expensive and dangerous water damage.

Despite our drier climate, water damage can still seep in from unexpected places: From pool splashes to spilled drinks and leaky plumbing, there’s an ever-present risk of water damage.

Waterproofing doesn’t just protect the surface it’s applied to: In the cases of decks and balconies, it also serves as a first line of defense for attached structures such as your home or business. As a result, waterproofing is a great investment not just for your outdoor surfaces, but also for your entire property.

Increases the lifespan of your outdoor areas

By sealing your surfaces away from water and moisture, you’ll also prevent mold, mildew, rot, and other forms of water damage that can destroy structures over time. In doing so, you’ll drastically increase the lifespan of your outdoor surfaces, sparing you the high cost of expensive replacements and rebuilds.

While waterproof coatings eventually wear away, regular re-coatings combined with cleaning and maintenance can increase your deck or patio’s lifespan almost indefinitely.

Preserves beauty and finishes

Water damage isn’t just expensive—it’s also ugly!

By preventing water damage, you’ll also prevent unsightly discoloration caused by mold, mildew, and rot. Waterproofing’s crystal-clear coating also helps lock in the original beauty of paints, finishes, and natural colors of your deck or patio material.

Makes cleaning and maintenance easier

Water settling into cracks, pores, and seams can make cleaning difficult, if not impossible to do completely.

With a waterproof coating, cleaning your deck becomes more like cleaning a window: Simply scrub and wipe down. Waterproofing also adds an extra layer of protection against regular wear and tear, making maintenance almost unnecessary apart from regular cleaning and re-coatings.

Our 5-Step Waterproofing Process

The many benefits of waterproofing come from our unique five-step process, which applies a total of four tough layers of waterproof coating to completely seal your outdoor surfaces. Read on to learn more about our signature waterproofing process.

1. Lay plywood and metal lath

Before waterproofing begins, we’ll check and/or lay down a plywood layer reinforced by a metal lath mesh.

During this stage, we’ll also check to see if the plywood is the right thickness and size, as well as ensure that it’s free of any mold or dry rot. With the extra addition of metal lath for rigidity, we’ll ensure that your waterproof surfaces have a strong foundation.

2. Pour waterproof silica cement

With the surface ready for waterproofing, it’s time to pour the first of four layers.

This first layer is a silica-based waterproof cement which fills the metal lath. This layer not only provides the first layer of water protection, but it also adheres to the lath and provides a strong base for the next three layers.

3. Apply fiberglass and resin

Once the silica cement is set, we apply a second waterproof layer of fiberglass and resin.

In addition to providing an extra layer of protection, this coat also helps prevent cracking that could damage your surface and allow water to settle.

4. Pour a second layer of cement

With the crack-resistant fiberglass and resin layer set and in place, we add an additional layer of waterproof silica cement.

But why a second layer of cement? In addition to providing even more waterproof protection, it also seals in the fiberglass and resin layer, allowing it to do its job for longer. This layer is also a kind of “topcoat” that will be the surface everyone sees.

5. Apply texture and sealer

Before the second layer of cement sets, we can apply different textures to suit your tastes. Once the cement is set, we’ll apply a final layer of sealer to, well, seal everything in. Our seal coats are available in a variety of colors to match the look of your outdoor spaces.

Waterproofing FAQs

Still have questions about waterproofing? The answer might be here.

Do I need waterproofing?

While waterproofing is optional for any outdoor surface, it’s the only way to truly protect against water damage and extend the life of your deck, patio, or balcony. As a result, though you don’t technically need it, you’ll save a ton of money and headaches by making the investment.

How long does waterproofing last?

Waterproof coatings can last 10 years or more with regular cleaning and maintenance. By contrast, outdoor surfaces without waterproofing will often need replacement or extensive repair in only 5-10 years.

Is painting the same as waterproofing?

Though some paints may have waterproof properties, they can’t hold up to long-term water exposure the same way a waterproof coating can. Plus, with seal coats available in many different colors, our process allows you to waterproof and “paint” at the same time!

Where can I find commercial waterproofing contractors near me?

Depending on your area, you may have several commercial waterproofing contractors to choose from. Capital Deck & Stair is proud to be one of the premier waterproofing companies in Los Angeles and Orange County.

What questions should I ask waterproofing contractors in Los Angeles?

Hiring a waterproofing contractor can be a daunting task. Before you hire anyone, ask if they’re fully licensed and insured in your state. Also be sure to check their experience and work portfolio to see if they can handle the scope of your job. You should also ask how long they’ve been in business, what kind of materials they use, and anything else about their overall process and cost breakdown.

The right contractor will be transparent about all of these points and work with you to develop the right solution for your budget.
